His painting aroused incomprehension and mockery. Until the end of the 1890s, it was mainly fellow artists and the art dealer and gallery owner Ambroise Vollard who discovered his work and were among the first to buy his paintings.
Today he is said to have built a bridge between Impressionism of the late 19th century and the new artistic movement of the early 20th century, Cubism.
