« Not trying to imitate form but to create form; not to imitate life but to find a counterpart to life. »
Vanessa Sahlman’s creation is guided by her perceptions of night dreams, reality, emotional power and raw energy. Her art reflects paradoxical relationships such as between life and death, melancholy and euphoria. In this borderland, she shapes the balancing act between the individual and eternity. Sahlman draws forms from the landscape, the architectural and the sculptural. Do not try to imitate form but create form; not to imitate life but to find a counterpart to life. The images, sometimes cruel and distorted, sometimes funny, depict more or less hidden faces and the space where man exists between birth and death that changes according to his conditions. Identity relates to the portrait in the same way as the ”place” relates to the landscape. Draws stylized, figuratively mixed with bold geometry with a thin pen in ink to produce a strictly interpretable expression. Also works in oil and objects in wood. Converts certain subjects into a moving image.
